How to Use the Sorter

This tool is designed for the first week after a residential fire, when homeowners are trying to keep emergency work, insurance calls, temporary housing, and contents documentation in order. The score is not a coverage decision. It is a practical readiness signal that shows whether the claim file has enough structure for a focused scope review.

Start with the room count and smoke spread. Fire damage can be concentrated in one area while smoke, water, and emergency access affect other rooms. Then add displacement days and contents volume. Those inputs help separate a small repair discussion from a larger scope review involving additional living expense records, personal property, pack-out, cleaning, and rebuild sequencing.

The evidence checks are intentionally basic. Wide photos establish location. Close photos establish detail. Policy review connects each request to the contract. Living expense receipts explain why costs were necessary. Mitigation invoices show how the property was protected. A contents inventory prevents damaged personal property from becoming a memory exercise weeks later.

Use the action list as a next-step list, not a legal conclusion. If the sorter flags missing living expense receipts, collect hotel, laundry, meal-difference, pet boarding, rental, mileage, or storage records that apply. If it flags mitigation, organize board-up, smoke cleaning, debris removal, utility, and contractor notes. If it flags contents, begin with high-value items and then group ordinary items by room.
